The West Hamlin Elementary first biannual induction ceremony for the National Elementary Honor Society will be on Thursday, December 2, 2021 at 6:00 PM in the West Hamlin Elementary Gymnasium. A total of thirty, 5th grade students will be inducted into the school’s chapter. 4th grade students will be inducted in the Spring.
To be eligible for membership consideration, 4th and 5th grade students must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Additionally, candidates must meet high standards of responsibility, service, and leadership.
Leadership is based on the student’s participation in community or school activities or election to an office, as well as being positive role models in class and the school environment. To meet the service requirement, the student must have been active in service projects in their family circle, school, and community.
Students are reviewed by a faculty council appointed by the principal.
As members of NEHS, these students will now engage in a number of chapter service projects.
West Hamlin Elementary Principal Rod Hoover comments that “the National Elementary Honor Society elevates our school climate and community commitment through service, leadership, character, and the values of scholarship. Our students in the NEHS will exhibit these exemplary characteristics to create a positive impact on our school and throughout our community.”
NEHS is modeled on its companion organization, the National Honor Society (NHS), which is the nation’s oldest and best-known student recognition program. NEHS was founded in 2008 by the National Association of Secondary School Principals, which is also the parent organization for NHS, in partnership with the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) Foundation.
