Welcome to Child Nutrition

Lincoln County Schools Child Nutrition Programs

The Lincoln County Schools Child Nutrition Department is committed to ensuring that all students have access to healthy, nutritious meals every day. We proudly participate in the following programs to support student well-being and academic success:

  • National School Lunch & Breakfast Program: We serve nutritious, USDA-compliant meals to students daily to support their health and learning.

  • Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP): Through this program, we provide afterschool snacks and/or suppers to students, ensuring they have access to nutritious food beyond the school day.

  • Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP): Students at Duval PK-8, Hamlin PK-8, Harts PK-8, and West Hamlin Elementary benefit from the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Grant, which provides fresh fruits and vegetables at no cost outside of breakfast, lunch, and CACFP programs. This initiative which helps introduce students to a variety of fresh produce while promoting healthy eating habits.

  • Backpack Program: This program provides nutritious, easy-to-prepare meals for students to take home over the weekends and school breaks, ensuring they have access to food even when school is not in session.

  • Seamless Summer Feeding Program: During the summer months, this program offers free meals to children in the community to help combat food insecurity when school is not in session.

By participating in these programs, Lincoln County Schools ensures that students receive the nutrition they need to learn, grow, and thrive.

Promoting Student Health and Wellness

Research shows that a student's health and well-being play a critical role in their ability to learn. Schools have a unique opportunity to foster positive health and nutrition habits by providing nutritious meals and snacks, encouraging healthy eating behaviors, and promoting regular physical activity.

However, building lifelong healthy habits requires a community-wide effort. The Lincoln County Board of Education recognizes that schools alone cannot accomplish this goal. It takes the collaboration of staff, parents, and the broader community to support, encourage, and model healthy behaviors that will benefit students both in and out of the classroom.

Together, we can create an environment where health and wellness support academic success.

Community Eligibility Provision

Free School Meals for All Lincoln County Students

Lincoln County Schools is proud to offer free breakfast and lunch to all students through the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP). This program, part of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, provides universal meal service in high-poverty areas and eliminates the need for families to submit free or reduced-price meal applications.

Schools qualify for CEP when at least 40% of students are directly certified for free meal benefits. For the 2024-25 school year, all seven Lincoln County Schools will participate, ensuring that nearly 2,800 students receive nutritious meals each day. Participating schools include:

  • Harts PK-8

  • West Hamlin PK-5

  • Hamlin PK-8

  • Duval PK-8

  • Midway PK-5

  • Guyan Valley Middle School

  • Lincoln County High School

Meal Pricing for Adults

While all students receive free meals, adults—including visitors, teachers, support staff, and administrators—must pay full price for meals:

  • Breakfast: $3.00

  • Lunch: $4.00

  • Extra Milk: $0.25

Addressing Food Insecurity

Recent data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture highlights rising food insecurity nationwide. In West Virginia, over 14% of residents experience food insecurity, and more than 100,000 children live below the poverty line. The CEP helps ensure that students in Lincoln County have access to the nutritious meals they need to learn and grow.

Menu Changes Due to Supply Chain Issues

Due to nationwide supply chain disruptions, school menus may need to be adjusted with little or no notice. When substitutions are necessary, schools will make every effort to provide balanced, nutritious meals that meet USDA guidelines while ensuring students receive the best available options.

Food Allergy & Special Dietary Accommodations

Lincoln County Schools is committed to ensuring that all students have access to safe and nutritious meals, including those with food allergies, disabilities, or other special dietary needs.

Schools participating in federal school meal programs—such as the National School Lunch Program, School Breakfast Program, Child and Adult Care Food Program, Summer Food Service Program, Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program, Special Milk Program, and Afterschool Snack Program—are required to make reasonable accommodations for children whose disabilities restrict their diets.

If your child requires meal modifications due to a food allergy or medical condition, families must complete the Medical Statement for Students with Special Dietary Needs form. To access the form, please visit:
🔗 Food Allergy & Special Dietary Accommodation Form

Once completed, the form should be submitted to the school nurse or the Food Service Director for review and implementation.
